Which CO-Series Lock is Right For You?

The needs of every facility are unique. Three models of CO-Series electronic locks are available; the CO-100, CO-200 and CO-250. In order to determine which solution is best you should consider a variety of factors including:

Credential Type

Electronic credentials such as PIN codes and cards allow to you issue fewer mechanical keys which protects the integrity of your key system. They also allow you to easily add and delete users right at the lock for added security.

PIN: If for simplicity you wish to only manage PIN codes we recommend the CO-100; an offline manually programmable lock with a keypad reader.
Card or Card + PIN: If you would like the added security of card or card plus PIN we recommend the CO-200 or CO-250; both are computer programmable locks.

Number of Users

Each opening within a facility is unique. To determine the right solution you must consider how many users need access to the opening.

Small: For opening with a small number of users the CO-100 is an option. It can store up to 500 users on the lock.
Medium: The CO-200 can store up to 2000 users on the lock, so it can be used for openings with a small or medium number of users.
Large: The CO-250 allows for dynamic rights management via the magnetic stripe credential; making it and ideal solution for large campus like environments with a large number of users.

Sensitivity of the Opening

Certain openings within your facility may pose more of a security concern than others. We offer a variety of solutions for each that can all work together within your facility.

Low: The CO-100 is manually programmable and therefore does not offer audit trails, making it a preferable solution for openings where risk mitigation is not the primary concern.
Medium: The CO-200 & CO-250 offer audit trails which provide added security by giving you visabity to when a valid or invalid credential is presented; making them an ideal solution for sensitive openings.
High: For openings that are very sensitive a AD-Series networked solutions should be considered because they allow you to monitor and make updates in real-time.

Efficiency

Some openings only require the basics. For other openings you want additional features that increase efficiency.

Basic: CO-100 locks provide address the basic needs of electronic access control.
Advanced: CO-200 and CO-250 locks provide additional features such as the ability to schedule time zones, holidays, and auto-unlocks for added convenience.

Schlage provides the history of locks!

Locks History

2000 BC—Locks appear in ancient Egypt

Records show locks in use some 4,000 years ago in Egypt. Fastened vertically on the door post, the wooden lock contained moveable pins, or “pin tumblers”, that dropped by gravity into openings in the cross piece, or “bolt”, and locked the door. It was operated by a wooden key with pegs or prongs that raised the number of tumblers sufficiently to clear the bolt so that it could be pulled back. This method of locking was the forerunner of modern pin tumbler locks.

445 BC—Locks in the Old Testament

In the book of Nehemiah, Chapter 3, it is stated that when repairing the old gates of the City of Jerusalem – probably in 445 B.C. – they “set up the doors thereof, and the locks thereof, and the bars thereof.” At this time locks were made of wood.

722-705 BC—First wooden lock discovered

The first wooden lock was discovered in Persia in a security gate in the palace of Sargon II, dating back to 722 to 705 B.C. In appearance and operation, it was very similar to the wooden cane-tumbler locks. The pegs at the bit end of the key correspond to the bars, or the tumblers, in the bolt. When inserted, the pegs lifted the tumblers so the bolt could be retracted and the door or gate could be opened.

870-890—All-metal locks appear

The first all-metal locks appeared between the years 870 and 900, and are attributed to the English craftsmen. They were simple bolts, made of iron with wards (obstructions) fitted around the keyholes to prevent tampering.

1784—New concepts developed in lock-making

New concepts for locking devices were developed in Europe in the 17th century. Early Bramah locks utilized a series of sliders in a circular pattern to provide exceptional security. Bramah is the oldest lock company in the world and continues to manufacture its famous mechanism over 200 years later.

1774-1920—Lock-making takes off

Between 1774 and 1920, American locksmiths patented some 3,000 varieties of lock devices.

1909—Schlage’s first patent

Water Schlage’s first invention, patented in 1909, was a door lock that turned lights on and off.
